Bio:
Mariah was born August 11, 2343 in Dresden on Terra, the only
child of Anna Marie (medical technician) and Jeorge Lewis Kaldtz
(assistant science officer) . Her parents, at the time of her
birth, were both recently graduated from Starfleet academy. The
young family shipped out on a federation science vessel, the USS
Discovery when Mariah was 6 months old. Unfortunately, in the
course of what should have been "routine" medical
research, Anna Marie became infected with a case of Langerian
measles. Although a relatively mild disease for adults, it was
not so benign for the infant Mariah. Before the ship-board
medical personnel had identified the disease, the infant had
suffered extreme brain damage, severe loss of vision, and partial
deafness. Devastated, her parents resigned from Star Fleet and
devoted their time to finding help for Mariah, willing to try
anything and everything (legal or not) to improve their child's
mental and physical condition. Finally, on Adigeon Prime, they
connected with a doctor who specialized in genetic enhancement.
The doctor refused to "guarantee" that the procedure
would improve Mariah's condition, explaining to Anna Marie and
Jeorge that the child was possibly too slow mentally for even
this procedure to benefit her. Her parents, nevertheless, opted
to have the enhancement done. On her second birthday, Mariah
underwent the genetic enhancement procedure.
The results were dramatic and almost instantaneous. The child,
who had been to that point unable to walk or talk, suddenly began
making enormous physical and mental progress, not only catching
up to children of her age, but far surpassing them in mental and
in physical development. Her visual and hearing difficulties
disappeared. Indeed, her eye-hand coordination and auditory range
became phenomenal. She began to talk, and then to read....
voraciously, anything and everything she could find. By the age
of 3 years, she was reading on a college level.
Her parents, realizing that it was going to be very difficult to
conceal the child's enhanced genetic abilities from the
authorities, opted to homestead a remote property in the Triangle
area of space. In 2346, the family settled in a very remote
region of Lingaze II, a farming cooperative planet with less than
1000 settlers. There Mariah was tutored extensively by both
parents, and, from an extensive computerized library, taught
herself any subject that caught the interest of her quick mind.
It was soon apparent that she had a photographic memory, an
aptitude for art and music, and a fascination with all things
medical.
During Mariah's childhood and
teen years, the family stayed basically purposefully isolated
from other families. Her parents, feeling that a "normal
child" would be overwhelmed by Mariah's abilities, opted not
to have any additional children. For her part, Mariah learned
quickly that when the rare visitor arrived, she needed to
"play down" her intellectual abilities so that the
visitor saw only the charming child he expected to see. By the
age of 18, Mariah had decided that she wished to join starfleet
and "see the universe." Her parents were uncertain that
this was the best decision, but bowing to her wishes, gave their
blessing to her plans. In 2359, she applied to starfleet, took
the entrance exam (making just a few deliberate mistakes), and
was enthusiastically accepted into the starfleet medical program
in 2360. Working through the medical program was " a piece
of cake" for Mariah, especially since she had already
completed several intensive subspace courses on basic medical
procedures, general courses on anatomy/phsiology of humanoids,
and the latest Vulcan Science academy research techniques
over-view. She
graduated intentionally third in her class at the academy in
2368. (The valedictorian and salutatorian had to speak at
graduation).
Following her graduation, Dr.
Mariah Kaldtz was assigned to do a 3 year internship with Dr.
M'Binga at Mount Se'laya Hospital in San Francisco, Terra. Her
quiet efficiency and genuine caring attitude endeared her to her
patients and her preceptor. However, her shyness around people
anywhere near her own age earned her, unfairly she thought, the
nickname of "the ice princess" with the other
residents. Although her social life was lacking, her career
progressed well and she became known in medical circlesas a
promising young internist. In 2371, at the conclusion of her
internship in San Francisco, the Commander of a McCoy class
hospital ship, the USS Crystal Hope, requested that
Mariah be assigned to her vessel. Aboard the Crystal Hope, Mariah
worked closely with the commanding officer, Dr. R'beca
Thunderhawk, and, in short order, developed a reputation as a
proficient surgeon, diagnostician, and medical researcher.
Although she has enjoyed her time aboard the Crystal Hope, there
Mariah was only one of many fine doctors and surgeons. Therefore,
she requested and was granted a transfer to a ship of the line
where she could have more individual responsibility within the
medical department. For the next 2 years, she served as CMO of
the USS Atlantis, under the command of Brigadier General Luther
Fry. Curremtly, she is requesting a transfer to the more
"settled" environment of a starbase.
